Der Bullterrier wurde Anfang des 19. Jahrhundert aus der englischen Bulldogge und Terriern als Bullen- und Dachsbeißer gezüchtet, sowie für Hundekämpfe. Diese Tierquälerei wurde in England bereits 1835 verboten, mit dem Image des „Kampfhundes“ müssen die Rasse und ihre Halter aber bis heute leben.
